Sailing News Sheet 11th January 2010
Hi sailors

In case you haven’t picked this up yet from some website, or from SAILING magazine, there are some changes, effective 1st January 2010, to the Racing Rules of Sailing 2009-2012.

The main change is in rule 18.2 – c, to prohibit a potentially dangerous tactic that was the unintended result of the wording of this rule. The revision will no longer allow a boat to tack just before she reaches a mark and, as a result become entitled to mark-room from boats that had been clear ahead of her when they reached the zone.

Full details from www.sailing.org/rrs/supplement1.

Then that infamous Mid-Summer Splash. Last week, once more, was a no-no, and, after four in a row, we must conclude that it is our fault not realizing that over the festive season you all were far too busy doing the holiday- and family thing (yet GLYC had 34 boats for their New Year’s Regatta!)

So, as the festive season is now ending, we will give it one more try this coming Wednesday.

I wanted to name that one a ‘trial-wake’ for the MSS, which would lead to either a miraculous resurrection, or a proper funeral, but our Sailing Boss said that was too negative and we should blame ourselves!

So, let’s all pray that at least 4 or 5 boats will turn up. Do surprise us!!

The NOR for the Redhouse Interclub, on 23rd – 24th January, is on the Notice Board.

Then, last Saturday, we had the Skedaddle for the monos and the Mut & Fed for the cats. A very encouraging 12 dinghies signed in, BUT the wind didn’t play ball. Notwithstanding a ‘guru’ forecast of a loverly 14 knots, it was gusting up to 30 knots, and from the SE, i.e. pretty gusting (and degusting). Several of us tried, but it just was too much. Only 3 Spearheads and 1 Fireball, all of course with trapeze crews, made it, belatedly, to the start and had quite a race, following three Hobie 14s who had started in time. (I did warn you: Neil was on the bridge and Neil waits for no one!!!).

After Duncan Simpson managed to capsize his Hobie once again, there were only two left who sailed only one race. Pat Tarboton won, with Chick second.

The 4 racing machines were dominated by Dudley with Rob Clark on the wire, with a 2nd and a 1st.

Declan Nurse with Peter Hattingh on the wire got a 1st , and then a near sinking in the second race. Don Tait did his capsizing in the first race and got a 2nd in the second. And Ant and Di Parker’s Fireball had some gear trouble, which made them doubly late for the first start leading to a RTD and a 3rd in the second race.

The promised Committee boat starts didn’t materialize owing to the wind, but now will be done this coming Saturday, 16th January, when we all sail the third Fastnet (to the Heads).

As Neil likes to do the bridge from the Ctee boat, that will leave Tremayne Toms and crew free to do something else (unless you want to come on the Ctee boat?). Ray Ferguson does rescue (and by the way Ray – we found a junior life jacket, marked R. Ferguson, on the pontoon, almost being blown into the water. It’s behind the bar for collection).

We have some parents who are interested in buying some Oppies. If you have one for sale, then please contact Andrew Finn. Also we have a Hobie 14 sailor who is looking for a triple block set (if I remember correctly: two triple blocks, one with a jammer). If you can help, then please contact Duncan Simpson.

See ye on the water (and pray for that 14 knots). Joop Weddepohl (Racing Coordinator) 11th January 2010
