Knysna InterClub 13-14 Feb 2010
Hi sailors, First: there will be a Southern Cape Inter Schools Regatta at George Lakes Yacht Club over the weekend of 27th – 28th February. The Notice of Race is on the Notice Board. This is lots of fun for the kids, and also for the parents, and excellent training! So we hope that a huge party of our juniors will descent on GLYC.
The seniors will be sailing the Founders Trophy on 27th February which is too long a race for the kids anyhow.
Then we had our Interclub this last weekend with some 60 boats on the water, almost equally divided between the juniors and the seniors. KYC won the senior trophy on 330 points with our Brett Gething (Finn), Alastair Fraser (Laser) and Jacek Orzechowski (Finn) coming 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Good thing that we took 6 members per team, instead of 3 as was suggested by one competing Club, as other wise it would have been too embarrassing.
Declan Nurse with Don Brink (Spearhead) were 7th, Don and Nikki Tait (Spearhead) were 10th and Rosey Finn (Laser Rad) came 11th.
GLYC were second on 569, Redhouse third on 658.5 and Mosselbay fourth on 909. Algoa Bay had only one sailor and thus missed out.

But in the juniors the first place went to GLYC (234), followed by MBYBC (352), Redhouse (466.5) and then KYC (715), showing that we are getting there but still have a long way to go. Theewater also lost out with only 1 competitor.
One young lady who stood out in her Oppie was Moya Moorcraft of Mosselbay – her boat handling was a joy to watch, full of determination and lots of skill. She was the second Oppie after Jonathan Rees of GLYC.
The results appear to confirm my contention that the international Mirror PYH rating is very favourable, so if you wish to win, then do sail a Mirror. There was a wide variety of boats on the water: 13 Lasers (various), 4 Finns, 5 Hobie14s, 1 Hobie 16, 5 Mirrors (4 jrs and 1 snr), 3 RS (Vareo, Vision and Fevea) plus 7 RS Teras, 2 Spearheads, 2 Fireballs, 2 Sonnets, 1 x 12sqm Sharpie, 1 GP14, 9 Oppies, 1 (old) Xtra, 1 Enterprise and 1 x 0-9r.
If that doesn’t make a case for less proliferation in dinghy classes, then I don’t know what does.
But the PYH system does work and sorts them out, except for that favourable Mirror rating.
The conditions could have been better. On the Saturday we even had some rain (!) which took most of the wind away and we had 4 almost drifters. The Sunday made up for that with a vengeance – it howled 20 – 26 knots from the SE which always makes for shifts and gusts. The rescue boats were kept very busy with lots and lots of capsizes and near sinkings. Some times the conditions were a bit chaotic, which lead to some controversy over the bridge’s decisions, BUT if all competitors had lived up to the first rule of yacht racing: know your flag signals and look at the bridge for them, not on the water in hearsay, there would not have been any problems. Ian Price and his crew did a splendid job in getting 7 races in the limited time span and the rather extreme conditions.
This Wednesday there will be a Splash again for the juniors with Ian Price on the bridge and Barry Giggins on rescue. Then on Friday the keelboats are at it again with , once more, Ian Price doing the bridge. And then on Saturday we have the Knysna Lifestyle Pursuit Race, with, guess who, yes Ian Price once more on the bridge and Ray Ferguson on rescue. See the notice board in the smoking corner for the instructions and do note the early starting times for the slower boats. Joop Weddepohl (Racing Coordinator) 15th February 2010
