Sailing News 10 April 2010

Hi sailors,

Last Saturday we had a good lagoonfull of boats on the water. That made a luverly change!

In the first start we had 8 dinghies and Hobies, who sailed three races. Then there were 3 juniors also good for three races and finally 6 keelboats did their thing on a longer course. Kept the bridge of Neil and Norma busy!

The weather was fine and the wind was not howling for a change, which meant that Mike Pogodin, being roped in at the last moment for rescue, wasn’t kept busy really.

Thanks Mike, and Neil and Norma!

The dinghies sailed a short course in accordance with Dudley’s wishes to keep the sailing in front of the Club for the spectators, but then, I didn’t see (m)any spectators really, so one wonders whether that is worthwhile or whether we should be a bit more adventurous and go further away?

Jock McConnachie won the first race and John Fowler the next two, so guess whose handicaps have now been adjusted. The course likely was a bit too short for the Hobies who didn’t fare too well with the three last places in each race.

A total of 7 races have been sailed for the Commodore’s, which allowed one discard. Overall winner is Jock on 15 points, with John second on 17, and Joop third on 29.

This also meant that Joop is now leading in the Aggregate Trophy on 109 points with Dudley and Jacek a shared second on 105 and Brett on 104.

The junior results were very consistent with Kyran Bosazza in an 0-9r winning all three races. Cary Small in a Mirror was second in all three races and Luke Bosazza in an 0-9r was third.

The overall winner of the junior Commodore’s Cup is Kyran on 12 points with Jason Cooke second on 24 and Cary Small third on 27.

The Keeler Fridays have now been replaced by Keeler Saturdays. Winner last Saturday was the Stadt 22 of Dominic de Villiers, with Roger Clancy second in a Pirate, and Martin Young third in his Kelkiewijn.

Overall Dominic is leading on 24 points, with Geoff Goddard (Microsail) second on 23 and Martin third on 20.

This coming Saturday, 17th April, it’s the last race for the dinghies and cats before the Closing Cruise. It will be the final of the Fastnet series, that one to, not thru, the Heads. Tremayne Toms will be on the bridge and Derek Wheeldon does rescue. Jacek is the OOD. Start at the usual 14h30.

There will be no racing on 24th April, as, it is expected, a lot of our ‘aces’ will be in Saldanha for the Western Cape Provincials. However the keelboats may wish to race that day, in which case we can also have a fun race for any stay-behind dinghies and cats.
