Sailing News 17 April 2010

Hi Sailors,

The last official race of the season, the 5th Fastnet, was sailed under an overcast sky with a hint of winter coming, and rather fickle and holy winds. Consequently the 8 senior entrants opted for a short course, just to the Heads and back via Brenton. On the way up it was mostly reaching and running, the latter finding your way from one hole to the next one, or rather trying to miss the holes. Then came an interesting beat to Brenton and running and reaching again to the finish. It suited some boats more than others! Jock McConnachie, getting better and better in his Laser, won once more and thus got his handicap further adjusted. Joop Weddepohl’s reach-happy Sonnet was second, Jacek Orzechowski’s Finn was third, Colin Mathiesen’s Extra fourth. And Dudley Isaac and Rob Clark’s 505 managed to just beat the three Hobies of Chick Ramsay, Duncan Simpson and Pat Tarboton. That 505 is suffering of course from a personal handicap based on Dudley’s Finn performance, which, on a percentage basis, is more for a faster rated boat. For next season we will change the personal handicap to a percentage off the boat handicap, instead of a fixed number value off the boat handicap, which will be fairer for those sailing more than one type of boat. Overall Jacek won the Fastnet Trophy with Joop second, Jock third, and Pat fourth, but they were the only ones, together with sixth-place Duncan, who sailed in all five races.

Four juniors sailed two races with Justin Stoker getting a first and a second and Jason Cooke a second and a first. The two Bosazza broers were third and fourth, but, overall Luke Bosazza won the Fastnet juniors, with Jonathan Rees second, Kyran Bosazza third and Jason Cooke fourth.

Although this coming Saturday, 24th April, shows “no racing at KYC” in view of the Saldanha champs, the keelboats have elected to race that Saturday. Consequently, as we will run a bridge anyhow, those not going to Saldanha are more than welcome to take part in a fun race for dinghies and cats. We’ll start at 14h45 for the dinghies and cats, and at 15h00 for the keelboats. There will not be a rescue boat though as ours will also go to Saldanha!

Then, after the Closing Cruise and the Prize Giving, the calendar shows a further four Centenary Frostbite races. In view of the limited number of dinghies and cats actually racing, we thought of canceling this series. BUT the keelboats want to race on the high tide Saturdays, so we have now decided to cancel only the 8th and 22nd May races and to hold the 15th and 29 May races together with the keelboats. The 15th May there is a high at 16h54 at 1.77m, and on the 29th May the high is at 17h02 at 1.76m.

The Closing Cruise is on Saturday 1st May, sail-past at 14h00, followed by the traditional tea & cakes.

The Prize Giving dinner is on Thursday 6th May at 18h00. The formalities will be followed by a simple self-serve beef stroganoff at R30,-/pp with deserts available a-la-carte. There are many prizewinners this season, some known to you, but some may come as a surprise. SO do try and attend!

This is the last News Sheet for this season. The next one will be out again by the end of August. Happy sanding and painting and getting your boat up to scratch for our centenary season!
