KYC Newsletter June 2010

Commodore’s Corner

Chick Ramsay

It was with great sadness that we received the news of the sudden death of Willo van Reenen on 30th June. Willo was a stalwart member of the Club, who served as Commodore for 13 years from 1994 to 2007, the longest consecutive term of office for any commodore. He will be greatly missed. A wake will be held at KYC on Friday 9th July at 15h30.

The100th AGM held on 24th June 2010 attracted a fair number of people, especially for a winter’s night. The entire outgoing General Committee was re-elected with the exception of Declan Nurse, who had resigned, and Brenton Chauncey was elected in his place.

The Knysna Yacht Club Centenary Debenture Scheme

At its Centenary AGM on the 24th June 2010, the Club took a decision to raise additional capital for the finalizing of the Asches Cabin upgrade. We are calling on all members to be part of the celebration of the centenary by taking out a debenture, thus ensuring the continued maintenance of your Club’s high standard of facilities. Your contribution will help preserve the Club for posterity, much as our forefathers did 100 years ago.

This will not be the first time which the Club has called on its members for financial assistance to develop the club. The last occasion was in the early 1970’s when a debenture scheme raised all of R15 000 to build the new clubhouse. Each share was the princely sum of R25. One can imagine that the thought of such a sum then was the equivalent of what the club is looking for today.

The Club is raising R500 000 with debentures of R1000 each, bearing interest at the rate of 5% per annum, payable annually on the 28th February of each year in arrears. Repayment of the debentures will be not later than the 1st February 2016, but the club reserves the right to repay debentures to be drawn by lot annually should the Club’s finances be in a position to allow such early repayments. For further details, documentation and subscriptions, please contact Duncan Simpson at duncanfi@telkomsa.net or 0825696495, or Gaby at 044 382 5724 or kyc@kingsley.co.za.

South African Marathon Champs

The South African marathon Championships was held at the Avontura Resort on the Keurbooms in Plettenberg Bay on the weekend of the 11th and 12th June 2010. Despite the freezing weather, the event was a major success and the participants were most complimentary about the beautiful venue.

Local Ladies veteran, Michele Eray powered away from a small ladies field to take the gold in the ladies K1, and secure her place in the selection for SA team to Spain. Daniel Hyde, by default, took the gold in the U8 guppies (being the only competitor in his age category), Danie van Wyk got a bronze in the K2 sub-masters category, Hanno Smit won bronze in K2 vets category, and young Gabriel van Wyk narrowly missed out in the U16 K1 after being sick for a month prior to the race. The young development paddlers from Knysna also braved the cold conditions to take part.

The event was a major success and scoop for the Knysna and Plett Canoe Clubs. Well done and thank you to all members who were involved, especially our club chairman Rob Hyde and his family.

Crabs Creek Race

A decision was taken in May to change the flatwater Summer Series races to Winter and to arrange more surfski races in the Summer months. The season kicked off with the Crabs Creek race on Saturday 5th June and what a turnout it was! Many paddlers who had been scarce by their absence arrived, and the die hards used the race as training for the epic Berg River Marathon which takes place in July. The youngsters especially were out in full force and we had an unprecedented turnout of 14 under sixteens.

The race was won by ‘out of towner’ Gavin White with local paddler Martin Fraser-McKenzie in second position. The first junior home was Reuon Knobel from George who was also third overall. Michelle Eray easily won the ladies race, coming in 4th overall. The first youngster was development paddler Nouredene Filander, with Michaela Beers second and Denver Sinclair third.

Offshore Sailing – Keeler News

Roger Newby

At this time of year sailing is relatively quite. We continue with our bi-weekly Winter Series. At the last race we had 11 starters which is the current record.

The log currently stands as follows:

Geoff Goddard 22 points from 5 races

Patrick Wilson 20 points from 5 races

Brett Gething 19 points from 2 races

Watch out everyone Brett and his J22 are on the charge. Also watch out Patrick. We cannot continue to ignore your statement that you do not know the design of your boat and therefore need a generous handicap.

ARC World Rally

As part of our centenary celebrations we are expecting some of the participants of the ARC 2010-11 World Rally to be calling in at Knysna during November. They will be heading to Cape Town where they will be joining the 2011 South Atlantic race.

Cape to Rio

It has been announced that the annual South Atlantic race will be returning to Rio de Janiero in 2011. For the last few years the destination has been San Salvador.

This change will bring back many happy memories to the many club members who have sailed this event in the past.

Asche’s Cabin, although not yet officially open, has been the scene of many a gathering to watch the 2010 World Cup events and Rugby matches.

The Restaurant has also been very busy and the turnover for the month has been one of the best ever.

We said goodbye to our barman,Raymond de Wet, who has been with us for three years. His last day was a Wednesday, so being “Happy Hour” day he had quite a good send off, with a generous collection.

Promise Hani continues to give us cheerful service at the bar and he has been joined by Lovemore.

Attention:

Members may not bring their own liquor to the club. Corkage of R15 per bottle is applicable to Champagne only. Please play fair and support your club.
