KYC members are a fantastic bunch of people! The attendance at the Special General Meeting, held on 23rd March, was a wonderful barometer of how much KYC members care about their Club. The turn out was way beyond expectations and the motion for the approval of the expenditure of not more than R500,000 on the rebuilding and refurbishment of Asche’s Cabin was carried unanimously. As a result, the General Committee have given the contractors the go ahead to commence the work in April after the Easter weekend.

Asche’s Cabin Donations:  While several members have already donated generously towards the Asche’s Cabin project, there is still a long way to go.  So please donate whatever amount you can.  Every Rand counts!  You can also help by paying your membership fees as soon as possible.  If you have not received your renewal notice please contact Gaby on 044 382 5724.

Members, who make payment of their Membership and other fees electronically or by direct deposit, please quote YOUR OWN account number AND YOUR SURNAME as a reference when making payment so that we can recognize the Member and credit the correct account. There are still numerous payments received where anything from the Member’s Secretary’s name to the club’s own bank account number are used as references leaving us a trifle baffled, as you can imagine! The bank levies a search fee for all inquiries of R14.50 – an expensive exercise as you can see. Also, for those of you making donations and paying for SAS and/or boat parking etc please fax through a breakdown of your payment to 044 382 5724 to assist correct allocation. Your cooperation would be sincerely appreciated.

KYC hosts Epworth Girls Team Cycle Tour – CT to PMB
In 1998 Epworth High School for Girls celebrated its centenary (12 years before KYC). As part of the celebrations, 14 girls trained for a cycle tour from Pietermaritzburg to Cape Town. The event was such a success that it was decided to repeat the tour every 3 years. This year the route was reversed so that the 15 girls could compete in the Argus Cycle Race in Cape Town. According to Les Willows, the tour leader, the tour started on 18th March and will end on 13th April. Covering a distance of 2,300km the route takes the girls through towns such as Franschoek, Montagu, Oudtshoorn, George, Knysna, Plett, PE, East London, Queenstown, Kokstad, Ixopo and on to the school in PMB. (Website: www.epworth.co.za)

A typical day’s riding begins at 4am and ends at around midday, an 8 hour day allowing for several stops and covering, on average, 100km per day.

The tour raises funds for the Red Cap Foundation, which is a Mr. Price outreach programme for the upliftment of sport at rural schools in KZN. The girls also assist with coaching sports at these schools. To date they have raised R150,000.

An interview with the eldest girl on the tour, Michelle Haines (18 and in Matric) and the youngest, Megan Morkel (15 and in Grade 10), pictured below, revealed that there was a good team spirit and that they were really enjoying this wonderful adventure. They said that the route had not been too difficult this far but expected that it would get more difficult as they approached their destination.

Les Willows expressed sincere thanks to KYC for their kind sponsorship of 2 night’s accommodation in the KYC Loft.
    Inshore Sailing – Dinghy News
    Joop Weddepohl
The Mid-Summer Splash, those Wednesday late afternoon races, now mainly for the youngsters, has come to an end. Of the 17 Wednesdays planned, only 8 were actually sailed owing to either the weather conditions or the lack of entries. The overall winner is Kyran Bosazza on 52 points with Luke Bosazza and Jason Cooke joint second on 45. Justin Stoker is fourth on 44 points.
There is one point for starting and one point for every boat beaten.

If one compares this year’s result with last year’s, when 12 out of 14 Wednesdays were sailed, and Dudley won with 143 points, it is clear how much this series has gone down in popularity. Sad, but there it is. As a result, for the coming season, we thought of combining these Wednesday races with the Friday races for the small keelboats, but then it was pointed out that the kids need their Friday to joll or something like that and would prefer to keep this racing on a Wednesday, even though they always are late! So, for next season, we will have Wednesday racing only every other Wednesday on a high tide. Hopefully this will encourage the seniors to enter this series once more. Eight Wednesdays are planned from mid-November till mid-March. And it will be raced for the Mathiessen Cup.

Then last month we had those two Weta trimarans on loan from Smart Yachting. They caused a lot of interest and we had quite a few sailors going for a trial sail. Most of our juniors were taken for a ride as well. Speed-wise we were a bit optimistic by estimating them to be somewhere between a Hobie 14 and a Hobie 16. They turned out to be a little slower than the Hobie 14, but at about the same speed of a Spearhead, they still are pretty impressive! The name “Weta” appears to be well chosen as you do get kind of weta on those boats in a blow!

We also sailed the fourth race for the Founders Trophy with a disappointing five entries. That series is now finished with Jacek in first place on 20 points, Dudley second on 27, and Colin Mathiessen third on 30. In the Hobies Duncan Simpson won on 13 points with Pat Tarboton second. There were no junior entries for this Cup.

Two races have been sailed so far for the Commodore’s Cup, with two more to go. The first one had nine entries, but the second only three, probably because it blew up too much and it was a long weekend.

And, in that same long weekend, KYC had a rep at the 505 Nationals at Sterkfontein Dam just outside Harrysmith. Dudley went there with his boat and had Stephan Kuhn as crew. They were sponsored with a much needed new set of sails by FLUID Yachts, a division of Custom Marine of Knysna, the same people who also sponsored our new notice boards. There were 16 entries with the top 505 teams preparing for the Worlds in Denmark later this year. The first race was a blow out with a storm of over 40 knots. Only four boats finished and there were two broken masts, two shredded mains and three shredded jibs. Saturday had light winds and three races were sailed with some very close and exciting racing. On the Monday the boats were on the water at 08h30 in winds of some 18 knots. Six races were sailed with no more than 10 minutes in between and Dudley said it felt like one big marathon. In one race KYC had a terrible start and they tacked away to try for clear air. They decided to carry on whilst the rest of the fleet carried on their tack, and when the KYC team decided to tack to get to the rest of the fleet they hit a huge lift which took them over the entire fleet and got them round the weather mark first. A few boats managed to get past them on the run, but they ended that race in fourth position. The sailing was awesome and KYC ended in fifth position overall. Well done Dudley and Stephan! If it wasn’t for the new sails, Dudley said, we wouldn’t have been competitive, and it is great that a local yacht building company like Fluid Yachts put something back into sailing. This is the start of a campaign towards the 505 Worlds in Port Elizabeth in 2012 in which Dudley and David Shilton plan to race together.

Check out www.FLUIDYachts.com And, closer to home, end March we have the Michaelides Endurance race, and then in April two more Commodore’s and the last of the Fastnet races and that is that for this season.
The Closing Cruise is on Saturday 1st May.

    Offshore Sailing – Keeler News
    Roger Newby
The Friday Evening Series has continued and is gaining momentum. At the last event we had 9 boats enter. A lovely sight indeed! As boats are sometimes shared there are even more skippers than boats. As the evenings are now drawing in we have decided to move the race to Saturday afternoons. The first of these will be held on Saturday April 17th at 15:00.

Geoff Goddard of the Minisail “Splash” is leading on 20 points, followed by Dominic de Villiers in the Stadt22 on 18 points. Third is Teddy Hunter in his Pirate on 17, with a joint fourth for Martin Young’s Kelkiewijn and Mike Lavery in the Club’s L26.

Next season they will sail for the Active Sail Cup. Ten Fridays are planned from mid-November till early April, and it will be open to dinghies as well. For the full details please see the club website.
    www.knysnayachtclub.com.

“Gemini”, a Carter 34’, previously owned by Winston Jones is now owned by Anton Heyman and Geoff Goddard so you should see her on the water more often in the coming sailing season. “Doughty” in Mykonos Offshore Race
“Doughty”, the 72ft sloop owned by Ryan Lotter, was entered in the Mykonos Offshore Race on the 19th and 20th February 2010, and sailed under Knysna Yacht Club burgee. Of the 12 man crew, 6 were Knysna Yacht Club members, namely the skipper/owner, Ryan Lotter, Oxana Naku, George Parkes, Brett Gething, Mark Gething and Greg de Matta. In addition there were 2 long standing members of Mossel Bay Yacht Club on board, Dave Elcock and the old man of the crew, Melville Stephens, at 82 years of age.

The race from Cape Town to Mykonos started at 10h00 on Friday, 19th February with 110 competing yachts on the start line. At the race finish “Doughty” was placed 5th. The next day the 24 nautical mile Pursuit Race was run around the extremities of Saldanha Bay, with the slowest yachts starting first. As “Doughty” caught-up with the leaders on the home leg she was trapped behind an inbound ore carrier which split the fleet into two. This meant that she dropped to 11th place, which is still very credible considering the size of the fleet. “Doughty’s” next big event will be the Maputo to Durban race to be held on 28th April 2010

Moss-Dash - Knysna Plett dominate the podium
The Mossel Bay Canoe Club hosted a 15km surf ski race on the weekend of the 13 March 2010 and paddlers from the Plett and Knysna Canoe Clubs dominated the podium. The organizer of the race, Jan Hendrick said, “The weather was close to perfect. I congratulate Steph on his victory and for obtaining the prestigious MossDash Trophy. I had some of the wives taking pictures and there were more than 30 of Steph and only one of each of their husbands. This was quite a laugh. Perhaps I have to cut down on the beers. As Greg Fenn put it “the Plett pirates raided our prizes and pillaged our woman". Next year no prisoners.” See race results below.

Umkomaas – Another podium finish for Knysna

The Umkomaas – or ‘Umko’ as it is fondly called, formed part of the SA K2 river marathon championships and was held in Natal. The conditions were surprisingly low which made the race very technical, hard and long. Day 2 is run over the 8 biggest rapids in river marathon racing in the world. Named Number one to number eight, the rapids claimed a serious amount of casualties in the form of broken kayaks. The race was finally won by Jacques Theron and Pierres Cruckshanks from Hank McGregor and Grant van der Walt after a collision in the final rapid before the finish.

The river conditions suited Rory Pennyfather and his partner Hubby Sandburg from Knysna, as they were used to racing in similar conditions over 30 year ago when the rivers were generally lower. After Day 1, they were lying 3rd in the Sub-grandmaster and finished overall in 20th position and 1st Sub-grandmasters Says Hubby – ‘This was one of our best races for many years and it took us back in time to when we were youngsters racing flat out on the Umko.’

    Summer Series

The Summer Series Races came to an end this month with the last in the series, the Goukamma Race. Well done to all the children who participated and to Merilene for winning the Ladies race.

    Little Fish

The Little Fish Canoe Race took place in Middleton in the Karoo and one would wonder –‘why a canoe race in the semi-desert?’ Thanks to a water release for the farmers, these races have become annual events. An advance party of paddlers from Knysna set off early on Friday to trip the river the day before the race. The 28 km race itself took place on the Saturday and yet again the Knysna paddlers proved they were top notch. The race was won by local Cradock boy, Ryan Louw, with Michele Eray from Plett winning the ladies race and beating a field of men to finish overall in 3rd place. Other Knysna paddlers were Stuart Hyde in fourth place, Pierre Giraud in 7th and Trevor and Jennifer Niksch in 10th and winning the doubles and mixed doubles race. Greg and James Chauncey completed the Knysna compliment. Sunday heralded an 18km trip down the river with the two rising stars of Knysna Canoe Club – Gabriel van Wyk and Stephen Harker. These youngsters are set to take on the race next year at a competitive level.
