Commodore’s Corner

The Closing Cruise on Saturday 1st May was well attended by boats and spectators alike. The weather was magnificent and the tea and cakes provided by the Galley were wolfed down by a hungry mob and the bar was humming.

Asche’s Cabin Progress: Those of you who have been to the club in the last few weeks will be amazed to see how quickly the renovations are proceeding. Everyone seems to agree that the renovated Asche’s Cabin looks and feels truly wonderful. The new Western Deck is a winner for keeping warm in the late winter afternoons.

Asche’s Cabin Donations/Funding: Donations are coming in gradually but it would be good to see a stronger flow of funds. If you are intending making a contribution please do so sooner rather than later. See Fund Thermometer on last page.

The KYC Art Exhibition raised R800 for the Club based on the sale of 9 paintings and umpteen cards. Our thanks go to the Knysna artists who participated, to Roger Clancy for his kind assistance and to the members who bought the paintings. The Peter Barrett painting, which was on display (not for sale) will be auctioned at the KYC Centenary Formal Dinner on 28th August.

Because of the World Cup starting on 11th June, it has been decided to postpone the Music Trivia evening that was scheduled for 12th June until later in the year.

Inshore Sailing – Dinghy News
Joop Weddepohl

This report from Joop just missed the last newsletter – sincere apologies

The last long weekend saw the Western Cape Championships in Saldanha. This is the biggest event in South African dinghy sailing, and with 258 boats on the water this year was no exception. As always quite a few sailors from the Southern Cape took part and not without good results either!

Really outstanding were the KYC Hobie16 sailors, William and Lucinda Edwards, who out of 9 races had 7 bullets and a 4, for a total of 11 points. Their discard was a 9. Second were Blaine and Roxanne Dodds on 20 points. And then we also had Hein de Jamaire and Richard Ayers in 11th place, and Douglas Edwards and Chris Bladergroen in 29th. That was out of a total field of 52 Hobie16s!

The next biggest fleet were the 30 Oppies A, in which we had 6 of our juniors competing. For them this sort of racing is a completely different ballgame and it must have been quite an eye-opener. They didn’t expect to win, and of course they didn’t, but they had a lot of fun.

Another winner we’d like to call our own, although he didn’t sail for KYC was Greg Davies, who won the 9-strong open class convincingly in his Finn.

There were seven 505s in which Dudley Isaac and Rob Clark scored a pleasant middle 4th. They have only just started to campaign that boat.

And there was our Rosey Finn who has been campaigning in the 420 class with her crew Heidi Burger. They came 5th in a 17-strong 420 fleet and they were the first lady team.

There were also some other top-performing ex KYCers, who got their initial training here and then moved to the Cape for the much stronger competition and therefore steeper learning curve. Philip Bendon, now at ZVYC convincingly won in the 20-strong Laser Radial class, and Timothy Manley did the same in the 21-strong Dabchick class.

Ex-KYC members, Cundell Snr. and Cundell Jnr., now at GLYC, came 7th and 9th respectively, in the 10-strong Mirror class.
Well done all of you!

Annual Prize Giving Ceremony:

There was a very pleasing attendance at the annual prize giving ceremony held on Thursday 6th May. For the first time, it was a combination of dinghy sailing, keeler sailing and canoeing awards. The list of trophy winners is too long to include here so we have depicted 4 recipients here in no particular order. For the rest check out the KYC website.

Offshore Sailing – Keeler News
Roger Newby
With the winter conditions arriving in the Southern Cape offshore sailing will be curtailed somewhat for a couple of months. No offshore events were planned during May but the Keelboat Series is continuing throughout the winter.

The Keelboat Winter Series now takes place on every other Saturday afternoon. Although these races are primarily designed for the smaller “lagoon sized” keelboat nothing prevents other types of boats from joining in. So if you sail a dinghy or a cat and are looking for something to do on a Saturday afternoon please feel free to join us.

Earl Seals has just returned from a wonderful trip on “Imvumbu”; a 53ft steel Barens Seatrader owner and sailed by Ralf Dominick and Jenny Retief. He will be sharing his adventures with us at the Keeler Evening on 10th June.
Interesting Facts
If you are sailing close to a US Naval vessel don’t be surprised if your GPS stops working. It is reported that the US Navy has created a “GPS free zone” up to about 1nm around any of their vessels. This presumably to prevent GPS guided weapons from targeting them. I wonder how they find their way about the World.

One of our members, Chris Henwood, sent us an email, which states –

“What with the Centenary coming up it occurred to me that there is another nautical phrase that is relevant to KYC. Splice the Mainbrace! The order was given when serious labour had been exerted on board which I would say will be the case before, during and after the Centenary”.

A brace was a rigging line used to trim the sails by adjusting the angle of the yardarms. The mainbrace was the largest and heaviest of all the running rigging; on HMS Victory this was 13 cm in diameter.

During battle the enemy attempted to disable a boat by shooting through its mainbrace. Thus under stress of battle the order “Splice the Mainbrace” meant climbing into the rigging whilst under fire to repair the line. An order feared by all the sailors on board.

However once the task was completed the crew were rewarded with an extra tot of rum. The phrase eventually became a euphemism for authorised celebratory drinking. (Wikipedia).

Thanks Chris for this interesting information! We will no doubt hear the phrase used a lot over the next few weeks.

Canoe Polo
Well done to Jacek and Danie for getting the canoe water polo sessions off the ground. It is becoming a regular sight to see two teams battle it out on a Friday afternoon in the Waterfront and is a great source of spectator amusement. The hard work in setting up the nets and cleaning the gear has not gone unnoticed. Well done guys!

Canoe coaching
Janette Walder now has a regular group of aspiring paddlers who meet on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at the club. It is good to see some of the moms joining in. For more info contact Janette on 0832625991.

Development
Merilene Janklaas is now ably assisted by Stephen Harker and the new group of development paddlers seem even keener on conquering the sport. Well done guys – keep up the good work!
